Business Development/Sales Operations Associate

Salary: £36,000 – £40,000 per annum


Our goal is to fundamentally improve the way the transport industry functions in the UK all the way from how it is governed to how it is operated. To do this, we have decided to begin innovating in the most important part of the transport network, rail.


We’ve identified that the 3 biggest barriers preventing the rail industry from using new and innovative technologies are: cultural inertia, poor implementation capabilities, and a lack of startups dedicating their time to the sector.


To address these 3 challenges we’ve created a set of processes to tackle each concurrently:

  • We run hackathons and conferences that help attract new technical talent to the industry as well as showcasing the value technology and increased data utilisation can have.

  • Our team has partnered with some of the top consultancies in the world to create and implement new innovative technologies saving the industry time and money.

  • We conduct research into the barriers to innovation that prevent startups from succeeding in the industry


Our flagship movement, the HackTrain, is leading the way by running hackathons, building tech products, and influencing policy change throughout the calendar year. The HackTrain has become well recognised for being an incredibly powerful medium for solving the industry’s biggest challenges improving operational efficiency and customer experience.


Together we can drive massive change within the transport industry that will see it becoming more efficient and pleasant to use for everyone. Your role will be to source and develop on existing sponsorship opportunities for the annual HackTrain hackathon event.  You can expect some of the following opportunities:


  • Build strong and effective relationships with technology companies

  • Build strong and effective relationships with senior level executives within the rail and transport industry

  • Impact an entire industry through innovation based on the relationships and partnerships you build


Are you the one who can forever change the transport industry?

You will be at the heart of a truly unique movement that will have a massive impact within the UK/EU economy. In the first few months, you should expect to be in more of a sales operations role. Here are some examples of what you will be doing:

  • Researching organisations and individuals online to identify new leads, potential new markets, decision makers for purchasing, budgets and procurement.

  • Setting up meetings with cold-call leads for River (our CEO)

  • Contacting new potential clients via email or phone to establish rapport and set up meetings

  • Attending conferences, meetings, and industry events

  • Updating clients on new developments in the company’s products/services

  • Preparing presentations and proposals for your meetings as well as meetings passed on from other team members

  • Working with a designer to prepare all sales collateral

  • Negotiating and renegotiating by phone, email, and in person

  • Preparing case studies and reports for clients

  • Securing sponsorship for the hackathon events the team organises

  • Securing existing clients as sponsors for our future events


Skills and experience desired:


  • Ability to self-reflect and use mistakes as an opportunity to improve

  • Excellent team working and communication skills

  • Experience working with G-Suite services

  • Ability to multitask between multiple projects

  • Good attention to detail; we want someone who enjoys making things great!

  • Tenacity and persistence

  • Willingness to learn about and understand rail and other industries

  • 1-2 years work experience in a business development capacity whether in a fully sales role or in a sales operations/support role

  • Experience with online, cold-calling and in person prospecting

  • Tenacity and persistence specifically in regards to pursuing leads for business development opportunities, whilst maintaining emotional intelligence and building rapport with clients

  • Great presentation skills with the ability to communicate in a compelling way to clients and industry colleagues

  • Ability to communicate with C-level executives

  • Ability to excite and inject energy into people

  • Strong skills in storytelling

  • Eager to understand the details of Hack Partners’ position within multiple industries


  • Individual with experience and a track record in closing, between £20,000 – £100,000, multi-year contracts with large companies (B2B)

  • Experience with generating in-bound sales

  • Experience in a startup, early-stage investment or technology context

  • Experience raising sponsorship for events within the Transport or Mobility arena

  • Strong understanding of and passion for technology and early stage companies

  • Existing knowledge of the rail and/or transport industry
